Happy Valley

If you're wandering down Goodramgate in York and your stomach starts growling, there’s one spot that deserves your full attention - Happy Valley. Nestled at 70 Goodramgate, YO1 7LF, this gem isn’t just another Chinese restaurant; it’s the kind of place that quietly hooks you from the first bite and keeps you coming back without even realizing it.

The first thing you notice when stepping into Happy Valley is how effortlessly it balances casual comfort with traditional charm. Whether you're popping in for a quick solo lunch, picking up a warm meal for the evening, or dining in with friends, the atmosphere is refreshingly welcoming. They’ve made things even easier with wheelchair-accessible parking, entrance, and seating, so you never feel left out of the experience.

Now let’s talk food - because that’s where Happy Valley truly shines. The Hot & Sour Soup is the kind of starter that sets the bar sky-high. Tangy, spicy, and balanced with just enough heat to wake your palate, it’s a go-to for warming up on chilly Yorkshire days. But if you’re the type to dive straight into the mains, the Sizzling Beef arrives still dancing on the hot plate, aromatic and tender with just the right char.

Craving something bold? The King Prawn Curry takes the creamy route with rich flavors that linger - and pairs surprisingly well with their fried rice, fluffy and perfectly seasoned. For noodle lovers, the Chicken Chow Mein and King Prawn Chow Mein are both standout options. Each strand of noodle is lightly coated, not drowned, in sauce, allowing the freshness of the meat and vegetables to take center stage.

But here's something you won’t find just anywhere: the Soy Rice with Peas and Prawns, served alongside a combination of duck, chicken, and pork. It’s an umami bomb, beautifully balanced, and feels like a complete feast in itself. There’s also the Duck Wraps with Hoisin and Cucumber, which bring just the right crunch and sweetness, wrapped up in soft pancakes that almost melt in your mouth.

If you’re more into small plates and sharables, the BBQ Spare Ribs, Dim Sum, and Won Ton Soup offer bite-sized joy that’s great for grazing or building your own mix-and-match experience. Vegetarians aren’t left out either - the Vegetable Udon Soup and Kale Salad offer a light yet satisfying change of pace, perfect for when you want something healthy without skimping on flavor.

One of the subtle yet delightful surprises here is the tea selection. Happy Valley takes its tea seriously, with a range that spans from light and floral to earthy and robust. Pairing a warm tea with your meal isn’t just optional here - it feels almost necessary.

Let’s not forget the extras that elevate the whole experience: the place serves alcohol, coffee, spirits, and wine, with late-night food available for those midnight cravings. Their quick bites and healthy options also cater to a range of eaters, whether you're looking for something indulgent or something clean.

Delivery and takeaway options are prompt and reliable, ideal if you’re kicking back at home or working late. But if you do dine in, the friendly service and cozy setting make the effort worthwhile. The vibe remains relaxed, never rushed, making it a favorite among locals looking for a comforting lunch or casual dinner spot.

Whether you're in the mood for a fiery curry, delicate dumplings, or something sizzling straight from the kitchen, Happy Valley delivers consistency, flavor, and a bit of unexpected charm that’s rare to find in the heart of a bustling city. It's more than a restaurant - it's a trusted favorite where meals feel a little bit like home, with just the right splash of adventure.

Little gem of a Chinese restaurant in York, near York Minster. Very quirky and cottage like from the outside. Inside ... a few stairs to the restaurant upstairs, ceiling had original beams and little areas to sit. Received a nice friendly welcome, even though we'd not booked. Table and drinks brought with menus promptly. Three courses £ pp. My husband had soup starter, duck with pancakes and then chicken and cashews f.rice. I ordered BBQ spare ribs, crispy seaweed and sizzling beef in Blackbean and garlic sauce. delish. Bill £ including beers and wine. Reasonable for what we had. Flavours divine. Thank you. Would definitely return here! X
